As some people maybe aware there has been a spate of BMW vehicle thefts around the country, particularly Birmingham, London and Manchester, involving BMW 3, 5 and 7 Series vehicles manufactured between 2007 and 2011.
At Advanced Motorcare we became aware of the problem some months ago and have offered some owners the option of altering the pin configuration of their OBDC port (the onboard diagnostics port) that assists in stopping thieves using this method of attack. However this was not favoured by ourselves or customers as this altered the physical makup of the car although did not affect anything on the vehicle.
We have now been made aware that BMW are addressing the problem directly and intend to release a fix for vehicles that maybe affected by the security flaw. It should be noted that from what we at Advanced Motorcare understand this is not so much a flaw in the BMW system, more a potential misuse of diagnostics tools that is aided by certain configurations of these model vehicles.
For those concerned about their vehicle safety, BMW has a dedicated page on their website and anyone with a BMW 3, 5 or 7 series manufactured between 2007 and 2011 should visit the page immediately to check whether their vehicle is at risk.
